Leeds United midfielder Alfie McCalmont has revealed on Instagram that he has been called up to the Northern Ireland U21s squad for the upcoming international break.

The 19-year-old has played three times for the side previously, with his most recent appearances coming against Denmark U21s and Romania U21s in recent weeks.

A product of the Leeds academy system, the midfielder has developed through the Whites youth sides and was an important player for Carlos Corberan's U23s last season–helping them to with the Professional Development League North title.

McCalmont has been a mainstay in Corberan's side again this season and has been on the fringes of Marcelo Bielsa's first-team.

The teenager was given his senior debut by the Argentine coach in the Carabao Cup First Round tie against Salford City in August and then made his first start in the Second Round of the competition against Stoke City later that month.

The Whites midfielder appears to have cemented a place in the Northern Ireland U21s as he revealed on Instagram that he has been called up for the third time this season.

The side will face Hungary in an international friendly on Thursday before taking on Romania in a UEFA U21 Euro 2021 qualifier next Tuesday.

The Verdict

McCalmont's continued selection for the Northern Ireland U21s and his opportunities with the Whites first-team this season show he is a really exciting young prospect that is progressing well.

In addition to his appearances in the Carabao Cup, the 19-year-old has been named on the bench in the Championship three times this season, which suggests he is someone that Bielsa believes is nearly ready to make the step up to the first team.

McCalmont call-up is good news for the club as he should gain some really useful experience during the break.
