Leeds United teenager Alfie McCalmont has sent a message to fans after making his debut against Salford City last night.

The 18-year-old has developed through the Leeds academy system and broke into the under-23 side last season.

The midfielder helped Carlos Corberan’s side win the Professional Development League North title last year.

McCalmont extended his contract with the Whites last January and Marcelo Bielsa gave him his first-team debut at Moor Lane last night.

After the game, the Northern Irishman sent a message to fans on Twitter.

He said: “A dream come true to make my debut for Leeds United tonight. Also thank you to all the traveling fans, different class as always”.

The 18-year-old came on as a 70th-minute substitute in the Whites' 3-0 win against the League Two side in the Carabao Cup.

Salford were resilient up until the closing stages of the first half when fellow debutant Eddie Nketiah opened the scoring.

Goals from Gaetano Berardi and Mateusz Klich ensured the Championship side qualified for the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Leeds have drawn Championship rivals Stoke City in the next round, which means the two clubs are now set to face each other twice at the end of August.

The Verdict

McCalmont is the latest young player to be thrown into the fray by Bielsa and the Northern Irishman will be hoping that he can make more of an impact this season.

It was quite fitting that the teenager replaced Jack Clarke when he made his debut.

Another 18-year-old, Clarke had a breakthrough year at the club last season and sealed a move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer, returning to the club on a one year loan.

Whites fans will be hoping that McCalmont can mirror his success, though I’m sure they’d rather he have a longer stay at the club.
