Elliot Lee, Harry Arter: The latest Charlton Athletic transfer talking points

Published

on

Charlton Athletic are slap bang in mid table of League One going into the January transfer window.

It will be the first opportunity for new manager Johnnie Jackson to begin molding the team in his image. However, the manager does not get complete control over transfers at The Valley, Steve Gallen and Martin Sandgaard appear to be in the most powerful positions at the club ahead of January.

Notoriously a difficult window to negotiate, Charlton are in a strong position given the depth of quality in their squad to only need to cherry pick a few additions to improve certain areas.

Here, we have taken a look at the latest transfer talking points in SE7 ahead of the turn of the year…

Elliot Lee

Mirroring the exact same situation as in January 2021.

Charlton may have the chance to make a loan player from Luton Town permanent due to their contract being up at Kenilworth Road at the end of the season.

Last time around it was current Livingston attacking midfielder Andrew Shinnie, now it is Elliot Lee who endeared himself to the Charlton home faithful almost immediately after joining the club on a season-long loan towards the back end of the summer window.

Harry Arter

It seems unlikely that Harry Arter will return to his parent club, Nottingham Forest, in January.

Fitness has been a real problem for the 32-year-old who has only made four league starts for the club despite coming in with a big reputation for the level.

Charlton are blessed with a host of central midfielders, many of which have struggled to get a looking since Nigel Adkins’ dismissal with George Dobson, Elliot Lee and Alex Gilbey nailing down spots in the starting XI.

With Jake Forster-Caskey set for a return in the business end of the season, Arter may have his work cut out forcing his way into Jackson’s consideration. An alternative destination where playing time would be more likely, could be advisable at this stage of his career.

Centre back priority

One area the Addicks are lacking, particularly with Jackson deploying a three at the back formation, is at centre back.

Sam Lavelle and Ryan Inniss have been long term absentees this term, both are on the mend, and Inniss returned from the bench in the club’s last outing, but someone to take some of the weight off of Jason Pearce’s shoulders in the short term would be wise.

There is space for another loanee to add much needed depth at the back.
