Leeds United's managing director Angus Kinnear has revealed plans to extend the capacity at Elland Road to 50,000 seats in the future.

Speaking in an event for their 100th anniversary as a club, Kinnear outlined his plans at a civic reception which was being held by the Lord Mayor of Leeds.

"In our centenary year we’re very proud to announce a partnership with the council on two initiatives,

"They fall under the title of Vision Elland Road. You notice that is a far cry from the Beeston we see today.

"Part of it is around the stadium and taking our stadium up to 50,000 and turning it into a true ground which can compete with other stadiums in the Premier League and in Europe."

Kinnear also revealed that the planned extension of the stadium will be on the West stand, so that it can match the hieight of which the East stand currently stands at.

His plans aren't ambitious by any stretch of the imagination either, with Leeds being well known for their tremendous support up and down the country.

The Elland Road faithful will be keen to see their side improve on last year's league campaign, which ended in disappointment after they were beaten by Derby County in their play-off semi-final at Elland Road.

Kinnear went on to state that the proposed plans to extend the stadium are dependent on whether Leeds have achieved promotion into the Premier League, which is something fans will be confident of achieving in the future.

Leeds will be hoping to get their promotion bid back on track this weekend, as they take on Birmingham City in what could potentially be a trick test for Marcelo Bielsa's side.

The Verdict:

This is a promising update for Leeds supporters to hear of.

In my eyes, they're one of the biggest clubs in England, and have one of the best followings up and down the country, that's for sure.

Leeds supporters will certainly feel as though they've got a big enough fanbase to sell out 50,000 tickets each week, especially if they're back in the top-flight.

This is the right call, as I firmly believe that Leeds will be playing their football in the Premier League in the next few years, but they need to make sure they win promotion into the top-flight as soon as possible.
