David Prutton is expecting Charlton Athletic to return to winning ways in Sky Bet League One this weekend, with the Addicks beating play-off chasing Portsmouth at the Valley, reports Sky Sports.

Writing in his prediction column for Sky, Prutton has predicted Charlton to pick up a 2-0 victory over Portsmouth this afternoon, as two clubs with play-off ambitions meet in League One.

Charlton currently occupy a place in the top-six, but have failed to record a victory in either of their last two League One fixtures, with Karl Robinson’s side losing at Scunthorpe United, before dropping more points against Peterborough United in late November.

Robinson’s side have had fixtures in both the FA Cup and Checkatrade Trophy since then, and Prutton is backing them to tighten their grip on a place in the play-offs this afternoon by beating eighth placed Portsmouth.

Kenny Jackett’s side are six points adrift of the top-six heading into this afternoon’s fixture, but will be looking to put pressure on Charlton, who sit sixth.

Pompey have won three of their last four League One fixtures, whilst also recording back-to-back victories in the cup competitions in recent weeks, beating Plymouth Argyle and Northampton Town in the FA Cup and Checkatrade Trophy respectively.

The Verdict

This is a must-win contest for Portsmouth if Jackett’s side are to have any chance of working their way into top-six contention, as the thought of a nine-point gap at this stage of the season is too much.

However, Charlton will be looking to return to winning ways after two indifferent results for Robinson’s side.

Prutton’s prediction is bold, as Portsmouth are sure to be fired up for this contest.

It would be no surprise to see Jackett’s side walk away with a share of the points.
