Coventry City secured a 2-0 victory over Middlesborough on Saturday, taking The Sky Blues into the much-desired play-off positions.
Viktor Gyokeres opened the scoring at the Coventry Building Society Arena in the 71st minute, before Martyn Waghorn sealed the three points for the home side in stoppage time.
The goals from the strikers ensured a fourth win of the Championship campaign and they are now just two points off top spot.
Focussing on The Sky Blues’ forwards, Jobi McAnuff addressed the pair on EFL on Quest (via Coventry Live) following the 2-0 victory.
“Mr Gyokeres, for me, what Coventry have now is a real attacking duo,” he said.
“We don’t see two up front a lot these days but certainly, Gyokeres, with his third goal so far this season gives them a real product.”
Joining permanently after a loan spell last season, the Swedish striker has netted three times in six league games this season, whilst Waghorn’s goal was his first of the new season.
It is always excellent for a manager when both strikers score and a clean sheet is kept.
Coventry have made an excellent start to the Championship campaign, and whilst this season is all about consolidating themselves in the division, the early signs suggest that they can perhaps be a little more ambitious.
Signing Gyokeres on a permanent deal is proving to be a great bit of business, with the attacking intelligence of Waghorn also playing a big part in the club’s early success.
Going forwards Coventry have looked good, but they have been equally as strong in defence, having conceded just five goals, with only Fulham and Birmingham City conceding fewer.
