Writing in his weekly column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, David Prutton has urged Leeds United to go out and sign a striker this January, but only if the right person is available.

Last season, Chris Wood, who scored 30 goals across all competitions for the Whites, spearheaded Leeds’ failed play-off push. However, the New Zealand was sold to Burnley during the summer transfer window, leaving a gaping hole in Leeds’ attack.

One person hasn’t taken the task of scoring the bulk of Leeds’ goals this season, with plenty of Thomas Christiansen’s squad chipping in with a handful of goals.

Kemar Roofe is the club’s top goalscorer in the Sky Bet Championship, having found the net on seven occasions in the league, whilst Samuel Saiz, Ezgjan Alioski, Kalvin Phillips and Pierre-Michel Lasogga – Wood’s direct replacement – have all bagged five.

Prutton, now an EFL pundit, has urged Leeds that now is the right time to sign another striker, as sixth placed Leeds don’t know where they could end up if they recruited.

He wrote: “I think now is the time to sign a striker but only if that’s the right person and if he hits the ground running.

“You have to speculate to accumulate and don’t go too big because if you don’t end up in the play-offs and you don’t go up then you end up with a huge wage bill.

“But you incentivise it in a way so that the lads who are already there get together with the lads that come in and say ‘look, we are going to knuckle down for the second half of the season’.

“Then you just never know where you might end up.”

A disappointing end to the festive period left Leeds sixth in the Championship table, with Christiansen’s side drawing blank on two occasions, a 1-0 defeat to Birmingham City and a goalless draw with Nottingham Forest.

Christiansen’s side are not in Championship action this weekend, with their attention turning to the FA Cup and a clash with Newport County.

The Verdict

Prutton is echoing the calls of Leeds’ fanbase, with a new striker an absolute must this month.

Leeds’ last two outings have shown how much they actually miss Wood, with Christiansen’s side failing to score a goal in 180 minutes of football.

The likes of Roofe and Leeds’ other forwards have done well this season, but they need more support.
