Don Goodman has had his say on Sheffield Wednesday’s promotion chances this season.

The EFL-pundit has suggested that the Owls are in contention for a play-off place, but admitted that they face a tough test to compete with the sides around them in the table.

Goodman pointed to the slate of former top flight clubs that they are competing against, as well as the recently relegated sides, and wondered whether that will be too much for Darren Moore’s side to go up this campaign.

"I think you expect them to be in the mix, but you look at that league and it's a strong, tough league and there's seven ex-Premier League clubs in there,” said Goodman, via OLBG.

"Chuck Wycombe and Rotherham who were relegated from the Championship in glorious failure almost, they were both desperately unlucky to be relegated from the Championship.

"Then there's Oxford, Plymouth, MK Dons who are all flying.”

Goodman went on to admit that he believes Wednesday will need to be at the absolute top of their game in the second half of the season to compete against all of these sides.

"It means Sheffield Wednesday have it all to do, but when you look at the quality within their squad, it is good enough, but the question is whether it'll be consistent enough,” added Goodman.

“In the first half of the season, it hasn't been, so the onus is on Darren Moore to get the best the out what is arguably the best squad in League One.

"They're up against it because the quality of the competition is very strong."

Sheffield Wednesday are currently eighth in the League One table. They suffered a setback in their play-off bid last weekend after falling to a 3-2 defeat to Oxford United, who are sixth.

An 84th minute winner courtesy of Sam Winnall separated the two sides.

That defeat cut Wednesday six points adrift of the top six, however they do have a game in hand on their rivals.

Next up for the Owls is the visit of Ipswich Town to Hillsborough on January 29.

The Verdict

The League One table is fiercely competitive this season, with several clubs all vying for the promotion spots.

While Wigan Athletic, Sunderland, Wycombe Wanderers and Rotherham have all set themselves apart at the front, there are still two play-off places that remain very open.

Predicting who will take those places is impossible at this stage, with roughly 20 games still to go.

However, Wednesday do have the quality to claw their way back into the top six and, on their day, can beat anyone over two legs.
