Swindon Town manager Richie Wellens refused to rule out pursuing Sunderland striker Will Grigg, as the Robins look to replace outgoing striker Eoin Doyle.

Doyle was the Wiltshire club's top scorer with 23 goals in 22 league games, but was recalled to his parent club Bradford City at the beginning of the transfer window. That leaves Swindon seeking a replacement.

Will Grigg has been identified as a potential target at the County Ground this January, with journalist Alan Nixon adding that Swindon also face competition from their League Two rivals Salford City for his signature.

QUIZ - Do you know where these 15 ex-Swindon players are playing for now?

Grigg's contract at the Stadium of Light expires in 2022, however, ruling out any permament transfer. The only opportunity to bring Grigg to The County Ground would be on a loan deal until the end of the season.

When asked if bringing Grigg to the club would see the attacker hit the ground running, Robins boss Richie Wellens told the Swindon Advertiser: “Maybe. Eoin Doyle was, so maybe, we’ll see.”

The former Northern Ireland international joined Sunderland from Wigan in January 2019, but has not lived up to expectations for the Black Cats. Grigg has made 33 appearances for the club, scoring six goals.

He has only eight league starts for Sunderland this term, finding the net on one occasion.

The Verdict

With Wellens keeping his cards close to his chest, while at the same time refusing the deal out, Swindon fans will be interested to hear the next development in this transfer saga.

Grigg would be a fantastic asset to have for any League Two side, as has proven himself in League One and beyond.
