Sky Sports pundit David Prutton believes Luton Town have a "fighting chance" of avoiding relegation from the Championship.

The Hatters currently find themselves at the foot of the table, but recent positive results have taken the side to within five points of safety with ten games to play.

It has been difficult to adjust to the rigours of the second tier for Luton, after their promotion last term as League One champions.

They have occupied the relegation zone for the majority of the campaign, but with three wins in their last five games, Graeme Jones's side have hope that they can achieve the great escape.

Prutton, who was speaking in the latest edition of the Sky Sports EFL podcast, thinks that Luton have a good chance of avoiding the drop, especially because of the inconsistency of the teams around them.

“I do [think Luton can do it], given how close the league is and how precarious the teams are that are above the bottom three," Prutton said.

“It’s tough, because of the way they got promoted we expected Luton to almost play their way into real comfort and it’s not worked out like that."

The 38-year-old added that a reason behind Luton's failure to adjust to the Championship is because they lost key players in the summer - James Justin and Jack Stacey both left the Hatters for chances in the Premier League.

"Their two best players left and they had to reassess how they would attack the season," Prutton said.

However, despite their league position, he is a fan of Graeme Jones's attacking philosophy at the club.

“To think he’d take to it like a duck to water would be a bit naïve, but his team can be very easy on the eye and by dragging the teams above them back into it they’ve given themselves a fighting chance.”

The Hatters are back in action this weekend in a crucial game against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

The Verdict

Prutton's prediction here is interesting - the EFL pundit sees something in Luton Town, and if recent fixtures and performances are anything to go by, there has certainly been an upturn when it is needed the most.

The squad has stepped up despite the absence of key players such as Sonny Bradley, Kazenga LuaLua and Izzy Brown, and the side's recent showing against a Brentford outfit fighting for promotion shows that Luton are more than capable of competing with any team in the division.

Luton play both Wigan and Barnsley in their end of season run-in, and getting a result in both fixtures will be crucial in their battle to avoid the drop.
