Peterborough United and Bradford City are both interested in signing midfielder Richie Smallwood, a report from The Hull Daily Mail has revealed.

Smallwood is currently a free agent after leaving Hull City earlier this summer upon the expiration of his contract.

The midfielder had spent two years with the Tigers, during which time he made 74 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring twice.

Now however, it seems that the 31-year-old may not be short of offers as he looks to find his next club for the 2022/23 season, and potentially beyond.

According to this latest update, both Peterborough and Bradford are now keen to sign Smallwood on a free transfer.

A move to Peterborough would see the midfielder reunite with Grant McCann, who was Hull manager when Smallwood captained the Tigers to promotion from League One during the 2020/21 season.

Peterborough themselves will be targeting League One promotion next season, having suffered relegation from the Championship after just a single season in the second-tier last time out.

Bradford meanwhile, will be looking to improve on what was an underwhelming 14th place finish in League Two in the coming campaign.

The Verdict

This does look as though it could be a really good signing for either Peterborough or Bradford.

Smallwood knows plenty about winning promotion in the Football League having done so in League One three times during his career, playing key roles with Rotherham, Blackburn and Hull while doing that.

As a result, the midfielder is someone who should match those two team's ambitions for next season, and a potential reunion with McCann at Peterborough could be appealing for Smallwood.

At 31, the midfielder still has several years to go in his career where he could make a significant contribution as well, meaning this does look like one that is worth pursuing for these teams.
