Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has claimed that the club are keen to sign Bristol City playmaker Sammie Szmodics permanently in the summer but that they will respect the Robins' wishes if they don't want to sell.

Szmodics has made a fast start to life with Peterborough since joining on loan in January.

The 24-year-old has started five League One games for the Posh, scoring four goals and helping them to claim 12 points from a possible 15.

He was integral in their emphatic 4-1 victory over promotion rivals Ipswich Town on Saturday–scoring twice as his side claimed a win that has helped them leapfrog the Tractor Boys and climb to third.

After joining in the summer, Szmodics had struggled to break into the first team at Bristol City–making just four appearances all season long.

It appears Peterborough are impressed with what they've seen of the playmaker so far and are already thinking ahead to a potential move in the summer.

MacAnthony released a YouTube video in which he discussed the January transfer window and revealed the club's stance on Szmodics.

He said: "He's an absolute little workaholic.

"We feel really confident that, if all goes well, and Bristol City allow him to move in the summer, we'll try and do something there.

"If not, we'll respect that and he'll go back there, but we'll be very happy for him to see out the season with us and do the business like he's doing so far."

The Verdict

It is great to see Szmodics thriving at Peterborough and it appears that he is going to have plenty of options open to him in the summer.

After really impressing in pre-season, the attacking midfielder fell off the radar a bit at Ashton Gate but some first-team football is exactly what he needs.

You'd imagine City's first thought will be to bring him back and see how he fits into their squad in the summer.

If they feel he doesn't, they know now that the Posh will likely be interested in a permanent move.
