AFC Wimbledon have completed the signing of Luke McCormick, the club have confirmed.

The 22-year-old has moved to Plough Lane following the end of his contract at Premier League giants Chelsea, meaning that he was available to move on on a free transfer.

A goalscoring midfielder, McCormick has a proven track record in League One after a brief loan spell with Shrewsbury Town was followed up by a successful season on loan with Bristol Rovers last term where the player scored six goals in 39 league appearances.

Mark Robinson's side will be determined to kick on next term, and according to the head coach, McCormick is the ideal man to take Wimbledon forward.

Discussing the signing, Robinson said: "That’s what excited him, so that’s where we will see him play.

"He’s a goalscoring midfielder, but he gets around the pitch and he’s aggressive and hardworking. He’s everything you want from a Wimbledon player in terms of how he performs.

"Off the pitch, he comes from a football fans’ background. A lot of people say that they ‘get us’ as a club, and I’m not always sure they know what it means, but he understands what we are about because he’s a proper football fan himself. He completely gets what it means to be a fan-owned club, we’ve had long conversations about it and he’s done his research. On and off the pitch he’s exactly what we are looking for."

The verdict

What a signing this could be for AFC Wimbledon.

Luke McCormick is a player who is a really exciting prospect for the future, but that doesn't mean that he won't hit the ground running.

The 22-year-old was really impressive for Bristol Rovers last term and that means that Mark Robinson will be hoping for a big impact from the player.

There's no doubt that McCormick is capable of playing at a higher level and the hope at Plough Lane is that he'll be able to do exactly that with the Dons.
