EFL club edge closer to agreement as West Ham and Crystal Palace linger

Reading are progressing with their contract talks with defender Omar Richards according to a recent update from journalist Courtney Friday.

Richards has been in impressive form for the Berkshire-based side this season, and has been a regular in Veljko Paunovic’s starting XI this term.

The left-back has caught the eye with a number of strong performances for the Royals, who have emerged as surprise promotion candidates this season.

Reading are currently sat top of the Championship table, and are six points clear of second-placed AFC Bournemouth after their opening eight matches of this year’s campaign.

It appeared as though Richards’ impressive showings didn’t go unnoticed though, with the Reading Chronicle claiming that Crystal Palace and West Ham United are interested in signing the defender.

But the Royals are clearly keen to tie him down to a new contract in the near future, with Friday claiming that the indications are that the youngster will commit his future to the Royals.

Reading are set to return to action on Friday evening, when they take on Coventry City in front of the Sky Sports cameras, in what could potentially be a tricky test for Veljko Paunovic’s side.

The capacity of the Madejski Stadium is 24,264. True or false?

The Verdict:

This is excellent news if true.

Richards has been brilliant since coming into the Reading first-team, and he fully deserves a new contract with the Berkshire-based side.

He’s been part of a defence that have only conceded three goals in their eight league matches so far this term, and I wasn’t surprised to hear that other teams were interested in a deal to sign the left-back.

It’ll be a real statement of intent by the Royals if they can tie Richards down to a new contract at the Madejski Stadium.
