Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has responded to rumours linking the club's star winger Marcus Maddison with a move to Hull City.

Former Posh player and manager Grant McCann recently took up the reigns at the KCom and, according to the Peterborough Telegraph's interview with Barry Fry, is looking to raid his former club for the services of the attacking midfielder.

And MacAnthony, who has insisted that Maddison will not be leaving for anything less than the £2.5million release clause in his contract, has responded on Twitter, writing simply 'surprise, surprise' along with a crying laughter emoji.

Maddison was directly involved in 33 goals last season in all competitions - ten goals and 23 assists - as the Posh narrowly missed out on automatic promotion, taking his tally to 52 goals and 84 assists in his 223 appearances for the club.

It was Doncaster, managed by McCann, who pipped his former side to that final spot in the play-offs and did enough to earn a move up into the Championship.

He made 186 appearances as a player for Peterborough and managed a further 103 in just under two years as the club's manager including the most fruitful season of Maddison's career.

The Verdict

There is certainly no malice intended in MacAnthony's tweet here but it will no doubt be a frustration.

Having managed Marcus Maddison before, it is no surprise at all to see him interested in taking him into the Championship with him.

His assist record is phenomenal for any level of football and it is a real surprise that he has not had the chance to prove himself higher up already.

I do not think there is any huge desire from his end to leave Peterborough but things can change very quickly in football.
