Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony appears to have suggested his side were close to agreeing on a move for Rangers man Greg Docherty, on a YouTube video he posted about the transfer window.

Peterborough have moved up to just outside the play-off spots in League One after a challenging start to their campaign and have recruited well during the summer. Mo Eisa and George Boyd are two new recruits who have settled in quickly, but it seems they may have also been close to adding Docherty to their ranks.

In his video, MacAnthony alludes to a player they were close to signing, but that they just missed out on.

“We agreed a deal for a player from Scotland, for a player who plays in the midfield area, who was on loan in League One and did very well last year,” MacAnthony said.

“We agreed a deal to loan that player with an obligation to buy him for £750,000 before the end of the season.

“We were very confident on that, but the player wanted to stay and fight for his place. So gutted, it looked very promising on Friday, everything was agreed, and the player was pretty much there but then changed his mind.”

The 22-year-old spent last season with Shrewsbury Town in League One and plays in midfield. Few others fit the bill, which has resulted in speculation that Docherty was the subject of the bid.

He's since become part of the first-team setup at Ibrox, appearing in the Europa League and the Scottish Cup.

The Verdict

It can't be anyone else, can it? Which other midfielders were on loan from the SPFL and would cost that sort of money? None that we can think of.

Docherty would have been a great capture for Posh. He's young and would have had lots of time to develop and turn them a profit.

Since going back to Rangers he's forced his way into Steven Gerrard's first-team plans and now looks to have a big future.

If he got wind he might be playing regularly at Ibrox, there's no surprise that he turned down a move to London Road.
