Lincoln City boss Michael Appleton was pleased with how Robbie Gotts coped on his full debut last night as the team lost to Portsmouth.

The versatile 20-year-old joined the Imps last month but with the team playing well, he had to wait for his chance.

However, he was handed a start at right-back against Pompey and it was a stern test for Gotts, who was replaced shortly after the hour mark.

Despite that, Appleton explained to Lincolnshire Live that he was pleased with the new recruit, although he revealed the player could be used in a midfield role moving forward.

"I thought Robbie did well in the first half, I thought he was good. It got difficult for him in that second half, but he’s going to be fine for us.

"He’s got lots of energy and I’m sure we’ll see more and more of him, and the better side of him, going forward. I think the kid sees himself as a midfield player but he’s certainly played enough times at full-back."

Gotts will hope to play a part in the FA Cup clash against Forest Green this weekend.

The verdict

It was always going to be tough for Gotts to be thrown in against a very good Portsmouth side but he did his best and showed flashes of his undoubted ability.

Appleton's comments show that the youngster sees himself as a midfielder and he will hope to be given a chance in the middle of the park in the future.

But, Lincoln are playing well so Gotts may have to be patient and then take the chance that comes his way.
