Adam Armstrong is currently on loan at promotion-chasing Blackburn Rovers in League One and boss Tony Mowbray believes he is better than his current level.

Armstrong has hit seven goals in as many games on loan from Newcastle and his current manager is convinced that his other boss will be watching.

"I don't know what else to say about Adam to be honest," Mowbray told the Chronicle Live.

"He's a young lad learning the game and I'm sure Rafa Benitez will see video clips of the goals he's scoring. He's a young guy who has come from a Premier League club and with all respect to League One, his attribute and quality, his ability to score with both feet mean he's better than League One, I'd suggest."

Armstrong worked with Mowbray before, scoring 20 league goals in 40 appearances in a loan spell at Coventry. Since then he's been at Barnsley and Bolton without enjoying the same level of success.

He re-joined his old manager at Ewood Park in January and has been in fantastic form ever since. He was a member of the England U20 team that won the World Cup, making for appearances and scoring once, in the opening game against Argentina.

Armstrong is Newcastle born and a lifelong fan of the club. He made 15 Premier League appearances before their relegation in 2016.

The Verdict

Armstrong struggled in the Championship earlier this season, as well as failing to hit the heights expected of him during his Barnsley loan spell. Maybe Tony Mowbray brings the best out in him, or maybe he actually is suited to League One at the moment. He's only young and a successful spell scoring goals in a promotion winning team will be just the experience he needs to give him confidence to kick on.
