Kenny Jackett is thrilled that on-loan Aston Villa player Andre Green is nearing fitness as it adds strength to their own prospects of Championship football next season.

Green is on loan at Fratton Park but has struggled with injury since arriving, but as he nears full fitness, Jackett can't wait to unleash him on League One defences.

He's expected to return this week after resuming full training, having been restricted to just two outings for the current leaders, but he's now in contention for a place in the Pompey matchday squad.

"Andre came back last week and was training with the physios, now he will begin full training," Jackett told the News. "We are comfortable he’s had enough time – and Aston Villa have given him the green light to go ahead as and when we think so."

Jackett went on to explain exactly how he hopes to deploy Green, who is expected to return on November 13th against Spurs Under 21 side in the Checkatrade Trophy.

"Considering the way we play with wingers, wingers that can go one-v-one and beat people, Andre has that power in abundance and his pace can frighten people. That’s the reason we brought him here."

Green has started nine league games for Villa, with 17 additional outings form the bench.

He has just one League One appearance to his name, lasting 45 minutes of Pompey's 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury in September.

The Verdict

There's no way Andre Green should be in League One, injury or not.

He had been tipped to break through at Villa this season and his loan move was a big surprise.

With Jamal Lowe and Ronan Curtis also in the Pompey attack, Green could be the final piece of their Championship jigsaw.
