Tranmere boss Rob Edwards was happy with what he saw from his side as they beat Cammell Laird 5-0 in their first pre-season friendly.
“It was great to see all of the lads play,” he said. “These games are ideal in terms of preparation and fitness. You could tell the lads were delighted to get the shirt on and play together.
“The attitude of the players was good, they want to do well and there’s a good spirit amongst the group and the staff so I’m delighted with the way it’s going.”
After going into the break with a one-goal lead, Rovers stepped on the gas in the second half and added four goals to round off a comfortable night at Kirklands.
“Funnily enough, we called it on the bench,” Edwards admitted. “We thought we weren’t quite as smooth in terms of keeping the ball in the second half but, in terms of making chances and scoring goals, there was more of a cutting edge.
“It was a good workout. The players in the first-half kept the ball quite well and in the second half we got more chances and scored more goals.
The Whites fielded three trialists in the game – Ben George, Joe Heath and Danny Woodards – and the manager said that all three would get another chance to impress tomorrow evening when Tranmere play Vauxhall Motors.
“It wouldn’t be fair just to give them one game so they’ll get a chance tomorrow and we’ll see,” he said. “It’s about opportunities and there are a couple of positions where we need to strengthen and those trialists are in those positions so we’ll see how they do. If there’s a chance [of signing a trialist] it has to be right for the club and, most importantly, the current group of players. The players who we bring in have to help them and help us to get through a successful season.”
