Cardiff City are set to face a crucial period in their season over the coming weeks and they need to start thinking about some important business they could do in the January transfer window.

The Bluebirds have been very disappointing with their form so far this season and they are now sat just three points clear of the relegation zone in the Championship.

That comes despite them producing a spirited fightback from 2-0 behind to take what could be a crucial point against Birmingham City away from home on Saturday.

It is clear that Steve Morison has made improvements to Cardiff since taking over from Mick McCarthy, but he will be needing a lot of support in the January transfer window to improve the squad enough to get the Bluebirds climbing away from the relegation places. It will be tough for them to find the right signings to make on a restricted budget in the winter window but they have to get around that.

A couple of key signings could make the difference between them staying up or going down this season. While it will also be vital that Cardiff manage to hold onto as many of their most important players as they can do in the January transfer window.

With all that in mind, we take a look at some of the latest transfer talking points surrounding the Bluebirds…

Defensive reinforcements eyed amid Rarmani Edmonds-Green links

Heading into the January transfer window it seems Cardiff could be eyeing additions to their defensive options. That comes amid the latest report from Football Insider suggesting that the Bluebirds are one of the sides that are interested in making a move for Huddersfield Town’s Rarmani Edmonds-Green.

It has been reported that Cardiff, alongside the likes of Derby County, Preston and Barnsley are interested in potentially landing Edmonds-Green from Huddersfield.

The report from Football Insider reveals that the Terriers are bracing themselves for offers for the 22-year-old and a six-figure sum could be enough to sign him as he enters the final stages of his deal with the Yorkshire club.

That comes with Edmonds-Green impressing during his loan spell with Rotherham United in League One so far this term. During his spell with the Millers he has been a standout performer and helped to establish his loan club at the top of the table in the English third tier.

Cardiff could therefore do very well to land a player with Edmonds-Green’s potential and on the basis of his excellent form for Rotherham, they should be doing as much as they can to try and ensure that they snap him up ahead of the other interested parties in January.

Kieffer Moore to potentially attract interest

It has been reported by Wales Online ahead of the winter transfer window that any hopes Cardiff might have to strengthen their squad by investing in permanent signings might have to see them first sell off some players to raise funds. One option that retains a lot of value for the Bluebirds in terms of a potential sale is forward Kieffer Moore.

Moore was courted by Wolves in the summer transfer window following his tally of 20 league goals for Cardiff in the Championship last season. However, the Premier League side were put off by the Bluebirds’ valuation on the Wales international in the end and instead opted to move for another target.

The forward’s form this season has not been as impressive as it was last term, but he has still found the net five times in the Championship. Moore will therefore sill have retained some value, but the Bluebirds will not be able to command around £10 million for his signature as they were doing during the summer.

Selling Moore when they are in a relegation battle would be a major gamble for Cardiff, but it might help them bring in the funds needed to add to their squad in other areas. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how they potentially respond to any offers that might come their way for him.

Midfield reinforcements and attacking creativity eyed

A recent report from Wales Online has revealed that Cardiff could be set to prioritise the additions of midfield players and a potential creative number ten during the January transfer window.

That comes with the Bluebirds having been light on options in the middle of the park and it does seem that they need some refreshing in that crucial area of the field.

McCarthy in the summer was unable to replace the likes of Sheyi Ojo and Harry Wilson, while the Bluebirds also allowed Josh Murphy to make a loan move to Preston North End. That means that Cardiff have lacked creativity and attacking invention at times and that is something that Morison will have to address with the right signings in the winter window.

There is the option that Cardiff could recall Ryan Wintle from his loan spell with Blackpool to bolster their midfield options. Doing that could even free up more resources for them to target creative players during the January window. Without a midfielder and more creative presence arriving through the door, it will continue to be a season of struggle for the Bluebirds.
