It's safe to say that it's not been a good start to the season by Middlesbrough, with Jonathan Woodgate's side currently sat 22nd in the Championship table.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference (quotes sourced from Middlesbrough's official website) ahead of their game against Derby County, the Boro boss provided an important update on some of his key players.

"George is nearly back into full training – he’s currently doing the warm-ups at the start of the training sessions. Rudy (Gestede) will probably be another six weeks.

"Darren (Randolph) is getting there, I’m not sure exactly but you’re probably looking at two to three weeks for him."

Friend has only made two appearances so far this season, with his most recent outing coming against Blackburn Rovers in August.

The experienced full-back made 43 appearances for Boro last season, and will be hoping he can force his way back into the starting XI at the earliest of opportunities.

Randolph has missed Middlesbrough's last two league games, with youngster Aynsley Pears starting in place of the Irishman who has been sidelined through injury.

It's a game where Middlesbrough will be hoping to pick up a much-needed three points this weekend, against a Derby side that have started this year's campaign poorly under Phillip Cocu's guidance.

The Rams currently sit 16th in the league table, and will be eager to kick-start their season as soon as possible under the Dutchman.

The Verdict:

This is a promising update.

I think they've missed Friend in their team, as he would provide Middlesbrough with some much-needed experience during a game that could be useful both on and off the pitch.

Randolph has been impressive this season, but could face a tough test to fight his way back into the starting XI with Aynsley Pears keeping two clean sheets in both games he's featured in.

The sooner Woodgate has his key players back in action, the better.
