Middlesbrough take on Crewe Alexandra in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening, where they will be hoping that they don’t fall victim to a cup upset.
In a pre-match press conference ahead of the game (quotes sourced from the Northern Echo), Boro boss, Jonathan Woodgate revealed that he will be making a number of changes to his team for the game.
The report claims that the likes of George Friend, Marc Bola, Marcus Browne and Anfernee Dijksteel are all set to feature in the game as they look to force their way into the starting XI on a regular basis for their league campaign this term.
“There’ll definitely be changes for the cup game. There are a few players who need to play, and we’ve also got a few who could probably do with the rest.
“George (Friend) trained again at the weekend, and hopefully he’ll be playing. Let’s see. They (the three new signings) will play in the game because I need to look at them. They will put pressure on the players who played at the weekend.”
Middlesbrough supporters will be expectant of a win to see them progress to the next round of the Carabao Cup, but Crewe will be hoping to cause a first round upset on the night.
Boro are next in league action when they take on () on Saturday, in what could potentially be a tricky test for Woodgate’s side as they target a timely return to the Premier League.
It’s a sensible choice to rest players ahead of this game.
Middlesbrough’s attentions won’t be on this game, as they’ll be looking towards their league game at the weekend as they look to win promotion back into the Premier League.
This is somewhat of a ‘free hit’ for fringe players to stake a claim to Woodgate for a regular starting spot in the Middlesbrough squad for the future.
