Birmingham City return from the international break next week with a huge game against rivals Aston Villa.

The Blues are looking to continue their decent start to the Championship season by taking three points against their nearest rivals in what is sure to be a heated encounter between Garry Monk and Dean Smith's men.

And with just a week to go until the two sides meet, some early team news is already emerging for the Blues ahead of the game.

According to the Birmingham Mail, the Blues will have striker Isaac Vassell back in contention following his injury, with the striker set to return to training on Monday, although following such a big spell on the sidelines, it would be a big surprise to see Vassell included.

It's not all positive news though for the St Andrews club, who will once again be missing midfielder Gary Gardner through injury, while manager Monk confirmed in the report that attacking midfield ace Jota has a hip problem ahead of the game.

Both clubs are hoping to claim three points not just for bragging rights, with both managers no doubt keenly aware that three points in this game can be a massive catalyst for the season ahead.

The verdict

Vassell coming back is a boost long term, but it's going to be way too early to see him included surely.

Gardner remains a big loss, while Jota being out represents an even bigger blow for the Blues.

Monk will be hoping that he at least has Jota available as he plots the downfall of Dean Smith's men.
