Dwight Gayle has never really asserted himself as first choice striker at Newcastle United and the 32-year-old is being touted for a January exit as a result.

The 32-year-old is a high earner compared to the typical Championship wage structures and has a contract at St James' Park that runs until the summer of 2024. Therefore, there are a fair few stumbling blocks in terms of sourcing a new permanent destination for Gayle, he still is an attractive proposition though on loan.

Gayle has not played in the Championship since the 2018/19 campaign where he scored 24 goals in 40 league outings for West Bromwich Albion. The Baggies along with Nottingham Forest have emerged as the two most interested parties according to The Sun, Daily Mail and The Telegraph.

Out of the two clubs it is West Brom who appear the most in need of the frontman, and arriving with positive memories of his previous spell there could persuade Gayle to choose the Baggies. Any deal would likely require a loan fee, to which, in their first season of parachute payments, West Brom would be in a better financial position to negotiate.

Adding Gayle to an attacking contingent that already boasts Lyle Taylor and Lewis Grabban may not be as attractive a move due to no guarantees that he will be first choice. However, with Jordan Hugill and Kenneth Zohore down the pecking order at The Hawthorns, it feels more natural for Gayle to slot into the side between Karlan Grant and Callum Robinson at the top of the pitch.

It would be interesting to see how the 32-year-old would fit into Valerien Ismael's style of play.
