Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay is closing on making his first signing for the club with Joey Pelupessy on the verge of joining from Dutch side Heracles.

The 24-year old midfielder is out of contract in the summer but the Owls are expected to pay around £2m to bring him to Yorkshire from the Eredivisie club.

Pelupessy has been a key figure for Heracles since he moved from FC Twente and he hasn’t missed a league game in the past two and a half seasons which demonstrates his importance.

That was emphasised further by Sheffield Star journalist Dom Howson who reported how Heracles boss John Stegeman told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf the move will seriously impact his side.

Joey is an extension of me as a trainer and an important pillar so this is a big loss. We are also proud that we have again delivered a player to a major competition."

The defensive midfielder is expected to complete his move to Hillsborough in the coming days although he is unlikely to sign before the game against Cardiff on Saturday evening.

The Verdict

These comments will really please the Sheffield Wednesday fans. Of course, he will still have to deliver on the pitch but it’s nice to sign someone who is getting praise.

He has played a big part in Heracles success over recent seasons and will surely bring much-needed improvement to the Owls engine room.

It’s also a good sign that Luhukay has recognised Wednesday are lacking quality in central midfield and has acted on it immediately.
