Reading have endured a poor season that means they are still not safe from relegation, especially after losing 3-1 at home to Sheffield United last night.

Having come within a penalty shoot-out of the Premier League last season, this season's slump has seen many Royals fans call for manager Jaap Stam's sacking but so far the club have remained loyal to the former Manchester United man.

However, a report from Stam's native Holland reveals a managerial chain reaction could see him leave the Madejski Stadium of his own accord.

Jaap Stalenburg tweeted that Heerenveen manager Jürgen Streppel could be set to leave the club and move to Vitesse Arnhem and in that event, Stam is the club's first choice to replace the outgoing Streppel.

That could mean that Reading won't need to sack Stam for many fans to get their wish of him leaving the club sooner rather than later.

The Verdict

This could work out well for all parties.

Stam gets to get back to his own country and set to work on a new club without a sacking on his CV, while Reading get shot of a man who looks to have run out of ideas without getting a reputation for sacking managers.

It remains to be seen just how soon this is on the cards, however.
