Duo expected to miss out on Blackburn Rovers opportunity

Midfielders Charlie Adam and Jacob Butterfield are not currently set to be offered contracts by Blackburn Rovers, journalist Rich Sharpe has reported.

Both Adam and Butterfield have been training with the Lancashire side throughout the summer, although it looks as though both will miss out on permanent deals at Ewood Park.

Asked by a fan on Twitter what the situation was with regards to the pair Sharpe – who covers Blackburn for the Lancashire Telegraph – revealed that although still at the club, neither are expected to appear in the club’s friendly with Mansfield on Wednesday night, or be offered anything by the club in the current circumstances.

Adam – who played 45 minutes of Rovers friendly win at National League Barrow just over a week ago, before scoring twice in a 3-1 win over Macclesfield in a behind closed doors game on Wednesday – may however have options elsewhere, as Sharpe revealed that an unnamed League One side have a ‘strong interest’ in the 33-year-old midfielder.

Former Scotland international Adam is currently searching for a new club after being released by Stoke at the end of last season, while Butterfield is expected to leave Derby County this summer, despite having a year remaining on his contract at Pride Park.

The Verdict

I think this is probably the right move from Rovers.

Regardless of the experience and ability these players may or may not have, it just doesn’t feel like they are the types of players that Rovers need right now.

With the likes of Lewis Travis, Corry Evans, Jacob Davenport, Richie Smallwood and new signing Bradley Johnson all already on the club’s books, a move for another centre midfielder such as Adam or Butterfield just doesn’t feel necessary right now.

By contrast, there are currently just five senior defenders and a single senior goalkeeper in the Rovers squad at the minute, so it feels like it is those positions need a lot more attention at Ewood Park between now and the end of the summer transfer window.
