With an ageing strike partnership in Jabo Ibehre and Barry Corr, Joe Dunne should move to sign a new striker before the season begins.

Barry Corr is an experienced forward who is likely to bring goals to any League Two side. Target man Jabo Ibehre, is also an asset and brings in notable skills, his hold up play being vital to the sides he has frequented over the years.

However, with Corr aged 33 and Ibehre 35, Cambridge cannot rely on this partnership to bring long term success to the Abbey Stadium. Undoubtedly, Cambridge United operate on one of the smaller budgets in the division, however, this does not necessarily have to be a barrier which holds them back.

If Dunne makes use of the loan market, he could bring in an exciting young talent without having to fork out an expensive transfer fee. Alternatively, Dunne could look to Non-League. Cheltenham Town, another club with a smaller budget, brought in Mohamad Eisa from Bostik League side Greenwich Borough. Sudanese striker Eisa repaid the faith of the Robins, with an incredible return of 23 League Two goals.

If Cambridge can dip their toes, and cherry pick some of the best Non-League talent, they could find themselves in a position to achieve beyond their means. Blackpool have become the latest Football League club to employ this strategy, signing Salford City player Michael Nottingham.

Meanwhile, local rivals Peterborough United are another club to have successfully employed this strategy, unearthing many gems in recent years.

Looking to non-league football, then, might be the way forward for the U's.
