Derby County ran out 2-1 winners against Barnsley at Pride Park on Saturday, putting an end to a miserable run of form that has seen them slip away from the play-off positions.

It looks like the Rams' torrid February could have put an end to any hope of reaching the play-offs this season but they still have plenty to play for with some big games coming up, including an East Midlands Derby against Nottingham Forest in a couple weeks time.

Derby boss Steve McClaren welcomes Preston North End to Pride Park tonight with Simon Grayson's side looking to bounce back after losing 3-1 against a strong Fulham side on Saturday.

The Lilywhites are placed one spot above Derby in 9th position so a competitive game should be on the cards tonight.

Derby put in a much better performance on Saturday with some players really stepping up after a disastrous few weeks.

But Football League World writer Harry Webster takes a look at two players that Steve McClaren must axe from today's starting Derby XI...

Julien De Sart

De Sart has done well since his arrival from Middlesbrough in January but he should be dropped tonight after a poor display on Saturday afternoon.

The young midfielder was replaced at half time by Jacob Butterfield who took his opportunity well when called upon.

If the Rams are to make it two wins from two tonight, McClaren should replace De Sart in the heart of the midfield.

Alex Pearce

Since the poor run of form in February, defender Alex Pearce has not looked the same as he did since his re-introduction into the side when McClaren arrived at the club.

Alongside Keogh, Pearce became one of the strongest defenders in the league, but he has failed to find any form in recent weeks and has been exposed far too often.

With Richard Keogh still out with injury, Pearce is likely to remain in the side.

Though when the captain does return, McClaren should have a serious think about whether Pearce deserves a starting place.
