Newcastle United are now within touching distance of a return to the Premier League and an instant return to the top flight is now the Magpies’ to throw away.

Spanish boss Rafa Benitez has built a superb Championship squad and given the magnitude of the current crop it is little surprise that they are beginning to run away with the title.

Saturday’s 3-1 win at Huddersfield Town, coupled with Brighton and Hove Albion’s 3-0 reverse at Nottingham Forest, saw Newcastle go five points clear at the summit of the league table.

Benitez takes his side to Berkshire this evening to take on a Reading side with play-off aspirations of their own, in what promises to be a typically entertaining second tier clash.

Football League World writer Lee Clarke looks at two Newcastle United players who could be dropped this evening.

Daryl Murphy

Although Murphy found the net during Saturday’s win at Huddersfield, it remains likely that Dwight Gayle will reclaim his place at some point.

The 26-year-old has found the net on no fewer than 21 occasions this season and he is still the club’s best striker.

It wouldn’t be any real surprise to see the London-born forward on the team sheet at the expense of Murphy this evening.

Vurnon Anita

Newcastle could look to restore the more natural DeAndre Yedlin at right-back this evening, with Reading posing a real threat out on the flanks.

Anita has done an admirable job when called upon this season but he could be replaced in the team this evening.

The 27-year-old looked to be on his way out of the club at some point, but in showing his versatility to play right-back, he has prolonged his career at the Magpies.

Newcastle United fans, do you agree that these two players should be dropped this evening? Is there anyone else who should be removed the team this evening? Let us know in the comments below!!!
