Blackburn Rovers are enjoying a solid season so far, with Tony Mowbray’s side currently sitting in 12th place in the Championship table, despite their 1-0 defeat at home to Fulham last weekend.

Mowbray’s side could still potentially manage to mount a push for the play-off places before the end of the season, but that could prove to be a very difficult challenge considering the form of some of the teams in and round the top six, which would mean Rovers would have to put together an excellent run of form before the end of the campaign.

However, a top half finish would represent another solid season for Rovers in the Championship, considering that they do not have the resources of a lot of the clubs pushing for a place in the top six, which was highlighted by the club not making a single signing in January.

Rovers, though, do have some high quality players within their squad that could have the potential to form a very effective five-a-side team, and it would be interesting to see how Mowbray’s side would fair against other five-a-side teams from other clubs in the English second tier.

Here then, we take a look at the strongest five-a-side team Rovers could field out of their current squad...

The clear and obvious choice in goal for Blackburn’s five-a-side team would be their current first choice keeper Christian Walton, with the keeper having offered a reliable presence between the sticks for Rovers throughout the campaign so far since arriving at the club on from Brighton in the summer.

The key to any successful five-a-side team is a reliable shot stopping presence in goal, and Rovers would have a keeper in Walton who would be able to pull off some excellent stops to build a platform for the rest of the team to perform.

Another key strength in most successful five-a-side teams in the presence of a solid defender who has the ability to step into the middle of the field and be comfortable distributing the ball from the back, and that is something which Lenihan would be suited to doing for Rovers.

Lenihan has experience paying in midfield while he has spent this season operating at the heart of Rovers’ defence, which would make the defender an ideal player to have sitting behind two midfield players and an attacker up front in Blackburn’s five-a-side team.

One Blackburn player who it would be impossible to leave out of their strongest possible five-a-side team, or regular team for that matter, is Bradley Dack with the attacking midfielder Rovers’ go to man in terms of getting the team playing and providing a real extra added attacking threat from the middle of the pitch.

Dack is currently out with a long-term injury, but were the attacking midfielder to fully fit he would be the perfect option to have in the middle of any five-a-side team, with the 26-year-old offering plenty of quality in possession and ability to score goals when presented with chances in the final third.

The second midfield option for Rovers’ five-a-side team was a more difficult one to select, with Lewis Holtby possessing the technical quality which would enable the side to tick in possession, but Stewart Downing would also offer that ability as well as adding a calming presence to the side due to his vast experience.

Downing also offers more defensive ability than Holtby, which would be important in helping Rovers defend without the ball, and that is why the former England international appears to be the best option to slot in alongside Dack in the midfield two in this team.

The player who would be the most ideal option to have as the forward in Blackburn’s five-a-side team would be Adam Armstrong, with the attacker offering plenty of mobility and energy at the top end of the pitch, which would enable him to both get back when required to help out the defence and cause problems for the opposition’s defence.

Armstrong has not been the most prolific for Rovers up front at time, but he still has eight goals and six assists for the campaign in the Championship, and that highlights that he would be able to both finish off chances and create them for Rovers’ other players in this side.
