Dougie Freedman set to move for Joe Mason

Bolton Wanderers manager Dougie Freedman is weighing up a potential summer bid for Cardiff City striker Joe Mason.

Mason enjoyed two loan spells at Bolton during the 2013/14 campaign, netting eight times in the process.

The 23 year old Plymouth born striker has slipped further down the pecking order at Cardiff City recently, as Ole Gunner Solskjaer has added three strikers to his squad in the last week.

Cardiff have signed Javi Guerro, Adam Le Fondre and Federico Macheda within the last week or so, as the Bluebirds look for an immediate return back to the Premier League, following relegation in May.

And Mason’s chances of a regular place in Cardiff’s squad have been weakened due to these transfer dealings, with the Republic of Ireland international featuring just three times for  Cardiff last season.

It is thought that any bid for Mason will not stop any pursuit of Lukas Jutkiewicz.

Jutkiewicz and Mason worked superbly together during their respective loan spells last season, and only failed to find the net on two occasions, in what seemed to be a lethal strike-force.

And the pair scored in games against Watford, and a 5-1 win at Leeds, as Wanderers finished the season with a real flourish.

Finances could however be a concern, with Middlesbrough wanting around £1 million for the impressive Jutkiewicz, with a loan deal the most likely option for fan favourite Mason.

Should Freedman bid for the two, big earners will probably need to be sold to fund any deal.
