Oxford United have given holding midfielder John Mousinho the summer to think over his future after revealing he won't be a first team player next season, as reported by the Witney Gazette.

The 33-year-old played 43 times for Karl Robinson's side last season, but he's set to be offered a player/coach role as opposed to a full time playing contract going into next season.

Having racked up 498 career appearances and enjoyed promotions with Burton Albion, Stevenage and Wycombe, it appears as though his playing days are coming to an end, at the Kassam at least.

“Mous knows he won’t figure that much next year. We don’t foresee that being the case," Robinson said.

“He will probably want to fight for his place, but right now I’ve told him where he is and he will have a decision to make during the summer. I was very honest with him and he was very honest with me."

That honesty has led the former Charlton manager to discuss a coaching role with Mousinho, who started his career back in 2005 with Brentford.

“We’ve spoken to him about doing more coaching and being alongside us. It’s his career, it’s his family he’s got to support and he will come back and give us the answer which is best for him.”

Oxford finished last season 12th and are looking to push towards the top six in the coming campaign.

The Verdict

If Mousinho has anything about him, he'll look for another club. Just because Oxford have been honest doesn't mean he has to settle for the crumbs they're offering him.

He's an accomplished midfielder with a couple of years left in him yet. At the very least he would do a great job in League Two, or his battling qualities might suit his former employer Wycombe at the bottom end of League One.
