Millwall are involved in a fierce Championship transfer battle for Newcastle United forward Dwight Gayle.

It has emerged today, via Football Insider, that five clubs in the second tier are chasing the experienced striker, with Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, Preston, and Reading also keen.

Gayle has been previously linked with Middlesbrough and Watford this summer, but Boro are said to have pulled out due to wage demands, and Watford are omitted from this latest update.

With that said, we asked some of our writers here at FLW for their thoughts on whether or not Gayle would be a good signing for Gary Rowett's side, and if he would be a starter at The Den.

I do think this has the makings of a good signing for Millwall.

Gayle has previously shown he can be a prolific scorer at this level - the question is, after several seasons of relatively little football, can he still do it?

I think so - he would be a good addition alongside the likes of Benik Afobe and Tom Bradshaw this summer.

One concern could be wage demands, though.

Middlesbrough reportedly pulled out due to the salary demands of the player and this may suggest that Millwall could be priced out of the transfer.

If he did move there, though, I do feel as though Gayle is a player that would do well at The Den and could replace the goals of someone like Jed Wallace, even if he clearly is not a like for like replacement.

This would be a good signing for Millwall if they can pull it off, considering the competition for his signature is so fierce.

The forward hasn’t quite ever shown his best stuff in the Premier League, but his body of work in the Championship shows a top goal scorer who can help teams in the battle for promotion.

Twice he has managed 20+ goals in the second tier, so if he could even come close to that then he would be a fabulous addition to any Championship side.

While he may struggle to quite recapture such good form, he is still capable of getting a double-figure goals tally which makes him a potent threat for any team.

Going to Millwall would bolster their attacking options and would be a very strong competition for Benik Afobe up front.

Dwight Gayle would be a great signing for Millwall.

He is a striker that is well experienced at this level and has been part of promotion winning and play-off sides which is where Millwall are aiming.

The 32-year-old will certainly give everything for the shirt and as one of the best strikers at this level, you can see him adding plenty to the club’s attacking efforts next season.

Millwall do have attacking options and have secured Afobe this summer.

However, I can see Gayle starting a large amount of games for Millwall next season especially if he could get in a good run of form as you just can’t replace what he gives in a side.
