Aston Villa are interested in bringing Everton midfielder James McCarthy to the club.

The Daily Mail reports that Dean Smith’s side are interested in taking Everton outcast who has recently recovered from a double leg break.

The Championship side face interest in the player from Bournemouth and Fulham interested, while West Brom, meanwhile, have also thrown their name into the ring.

McCarthy returned to the Toffees’ bench at the weekend in the win over Lincoln City in the FA Cup but was an unused substitute after a long period out.

With the player back to fitness, a loan move away could be sanctioned to allow McCarthy game time to get up to full fitness for the rest of the campaign.

And with his return, interest in the player will now be considered from the triumvirate of clubs involved.

With that said we asked our team of FLW Writers whether Aston Villa needed the 28-year-old.

Here’s how they responded.

Louie Chandler

“I am not sure they do.

“With the likes of Bjarnasson, Whelan and Hourihane all available it seems like a waste of budget and wages.

“He would be nice to have but certainly should not be a priority.”

Gary Hutchinson

“Not for me, no.

“McCarthy is a decent player, but they don’t need midfield depth right now, they have plenty.

“That said, what price can be put on Premier League ready talent?”

Jacob Potter

"I don't think they need him.

"Villa already have a number of strong midfield options, and the Everton man simply wouldn't be getting enough game time.

"It would be a waste of wages for Dean Smith's side for the remainder of the season."
