Huddersfield Town completed the loan signing of Martyn Waghorn last week, as he joined for the remainder of the season.

The 32-year-old has been at Coventry City since the summer of 2021 and after featuring on a regular basis last season for the Sky Blues, he has found his game time limited this campaign.

The attacker only appeared 11 times in the Championship and appeared once in the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

However, as he fell down the pecking order at Coventry, Huddersfield decided to take the 32-year-old on loan for the season.

Waghorn has nearly played 500 career games, with 360 of those coming at Championship level, with the striker also playing in the Premier League, Scottish Premiership and Europa League.

Huddersfield can now join the host of other clubs Waghorn has represented, with stints at Wigan Athletic, Rangers, Ipswich Town, and Derby County.

Now as this deal has been confirmed, here at FLW, we asked Huddersfield Town fan pundit Graeme Rayner his thoughts on Waghorn joining the club.

He told FLW: “Martyn Waghorn, I don’t know what to make of it really. Five years ago he would have been a superb signing for the Championship but now he's not really been in the goals for a while and I'm not sure what he adds that Jordan Rhodes doesn't already bring to the table.

“He's not particularly mobile, he’s not particularly quick and he's sort of a bit of a strong forward or whatever. Then we've got Simpson as well that that can play, his physical, is big and he's our own player, so why are we bringing him through. I wish him all the best and I hope he's the missing piece in the jigsaw, but I’m not convinced that he's solving a problem that we particularly had with his attributes.”

The Verdict

This is a little strange of a signing from Huddersfield, as it could be argued that he is a very similar player to that of Rhodes.

However, Waghorn will bring with him plenty of Championship experience, and while the Terriers are fighting at the bottom end of the table, that could be very useful. He’s not a particular signing that is going to get everyone off their seats, but he could play a big part in Huddersfield remaining in the Championship this season.
