Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk has claimed the club are trying to sign players in the January window but the market is competitive, which has drawn a frustrated response from fans of the Yorkshire club.

The Owls were thrashed 5-0 by Blackburn Rovers at Hillsborough today, a result that sees them drop out of the top six.

A brace from Lewis Holtby and a Cameron Dawson own goal left Wednesday 3-0 down at half time, with Massimo Luongo having been shown a straight red card after 23 minutes.

Things only got worse after the break, as Darragh Lenihan and Sam Gallagher added further insult to injury.

Speaking to Dom Howson from the Sheffield Star after the game, Monk was pressed about the Owls business in the transfer market.

He said: "We are trying. It is competitive in the loan market."

Even before top scorer Steven Fletcher was sidelined for more than two months, Wednesday looked as if they needed to bring in attacking reinforcements.

The Owls have been linked to Premier League strikers Connor Wickham and Eddie Nketiah but so far have not managed to bring in a striker.
