‘Don’t get this signing’, ‘That’s mad’ – Many Birmingham City fans will be liking what they are seeing after uncertain initial reaction

During the early stages of last season, Birmingham City secured a deal for Australian attacking midfielder Riley McGree.

Given the lack of knowledge surrounding the young midfielder and exactly what McGree was capable of, fans were quite divided when it came to his signature.

Some fans questioned the club’s decision given his lack of experience, but that was also outweighed by a number of Adelaide United fans who spoke highly of his talent.

Other fans were excited by the arrival of McGree, especially those who managed to find videos of his sensational scorpion kick from outside the area.

McGree departed the Australian outfit Charlotte FC on the 5th of October last year, and on the same day, he was loaned out to Birmingham.

Here, we take a look at the posts on Twitter when McGree put pen-to-paper on a deal with The Blues and assess if that initial response was justified…

Birmingham fans as a collective had a mixed reaction when McGree arrived at St Andrew’s, and rightly so.

Not many people knew too much about him, and given the difficulties of drawing comparisons to Australia’s top division and the Championship, it was difficult to judge what kind of player The Blues could have expected.

However, the Australian international has been a big success with The Blues, proving to be a real creative spark and is dangerous when in possession in the final third.

Fans on Twitter were also concerned that Birmingham had not signed a striker during that transfer window at that point, but they have since recruited at the top end of the pitch, lessening that concern.

McGree is expected to join up with Charlotte FC in January, and given that Tahith Chong is now out injured, the departure of the 23-year-old is likely to leave a glaring void.
