The 23-year-old signed a new contract with the Toon Army this morning until the end of the 2016/17 season, but will spend this campaign at the DW stadium.

Latics manager Gary Caldwell told the official club website: “Haris had a great season on loan at Rangers last season and he is a quality addition to our forward line, a creative player with an eye for goal.

"Newcastle rate him highly but he needs to keep progressing and is looking to play as regularly as possible. We are delighted he has chosen Wigan Athletic.”

Vuckic joined Newcastle United from Slovenian side NK Domzale in January 2009 and has gone on to make 20 appearances in all competitions for the Tynesiders, scoring one goal.

He went on loan to Cardiff City in 2012 in order to gain some first-team experience, making five appearances and scoring one goal.

Rotherham United were the next Football League side to benefit from Vuckic's services, where he scored four goals in 22 appearances which helped the Millers gain promotion to the Championship through the play-offs.

The midfielder moved Scotland last season, as one of five players from Newcastle to join Rangers. Of those players, Vuckic made the most telling impression at Ibrox, scoring nine goals in 22 appearances.

He is a full Slovenia international, having made one appearance for the national side in 2012 as a substitute against Scotland. He has also appeared for the U19 and U21 teams.

Wigan Athletic have had a busy transfer deadline day, extending Watford midfielder Sean Murray's loan until January. Earlier this evening, they also completed the signings of Bolton Wanderers full-back Andy Kellett and Jack Hendry from Partick Thistle for undisclosed fees.
