Wigan Athletic have bolstered their squad ahead of the upcoming season by bringing in two new additions on loan deals.

Callum Elder and Lee Evans have both joined Wigan Athletic on loan.

The Latics announced the signing of Lee Evans yesterday, with the Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder joining on a season long loan.

Wigan have also swooped to sign Callum Elder on a season long loan from Leicester City.

Lee Evans was made available after new Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo made it clear that he was out of the first team picture.

With Romain Saiss, David Edwards, Jack Price and Ruben Neves all ahead of the former Wales under-21 man (who earned his first senior call-up recently), he has decided to move to Wigan on loan.

The 23-year-old is likely to be a replacement for Max Power, who is set to leave the DW Stadium.

Callum Elder also arrives on the same day.

The Australia youth international plays as a left back and he is probably seen as a direct replacement for Stephen Warnock, who left this summer.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan in the Championship with Brentford and then Barnsley but only managed 11 appearances in total.

With Christian Fuchs and Ben Chilwell ahead of him in the pecking order at Leicester, the Foxes have allowed Elder to spend another year out on loan to aid his development.

The Verdict

These are both shrewd moves by Paul Cook as he provides cheaper, short-term solutions to their problem areas.

The Latics are resigned to losing Max Power but Lee Evans is an accomplished central midfielder at this level and arguably an improvement.

Callum Elder, meanwhile, has plenty of potential and is likely to thrive as he steps down a division after struggling to find much playing time in the Championship.
