Wigan Athletic have completed the signing of Ivan Toney, the club's official website reports.

Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney joins Wigan Athletic on a season long loan deal.

Toney arrives at Wigan as a highly rated young striker who has scored goals at League One level before.

The 21-year-old split his season last year with Shrewsbury Town in the first half and promotion chasing Scunthorpe United for the latter half, scoring twelve goals in total.

Toney has previously had two loan spells with Barnsley and played for Northampton Town before moving to Newcastle United.

With just four appearances for the Newcastle United senior squad under his belt, Ivan Toney has opted to head out on loan again for the 2017/18 season.

He joins a Wigan Athletic side who will be eyeing promotion back to the Championship after their disappointing relegation last season.

The Latics, under the guidance of former Portsmouth manager Paul Cook, are set to lose Omar Bogle this summer as he does not feature in their plans.

They have moved to bring in Ivan Toney as his replacement before the former Grimsby Town man officially departs.

Toney is highly regarded by Newcastle United and was part of their under-23 side that recently beat AZ Alkmaar 4-1 in a pre-season friendly.

The new Wigan striker grabbed two and will look to continue that fine form at the DW Stadium.

The Verdict

In Ivan Toney, Wigan Athletic have a striker who is young and hungry but also extremely talented and experienced at this level already.

Numerous loan spells in the past mean that he should't have any problems settling into a new environment.

Wigan have the benefit of taking Toney in a make or break year: if he scores plenty of goals, Newcastle will consider him for the senior side but if he doesn't, he could face a permanent St James' Park exit.
