Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook has signed a new deal with the club, the official website has revealed.

Cook has put pen-to-paper on a new four-year deal, committing his future to Wigan until the summer of 2022.

The 51-year-old arrived at the DW Stadium last summer, returning to the club he had two playing stints for, and he was tasked with winning instant promotion back to the Championship.

After guiding Portsmouth to the League Two title last season, Cook replicated that success at Wigan, leading his side to a first place finish in League One.

In addition to gaining a staggering 98 points in the league to be crowned champions, the Latics also had a stunning FA Cup run, beating Premier League trio Bournemouth, West Ham United and Manchester City in the process.

Cook was delighted to pen a new deal and he said: “I have loved every minute of my time here. It has been a huge team effort and I couldn’t have achieved anything here without the support of our chairman David Sharpe, chief executive Jonathan Jackson, my coaching staff, all the staff across the club and the players."

“It was always going to be a big challenge to win promotion immediately but a lot of hard work and endeavour has gone in from so many people, who can all look back on the past year with great pride."

Wigan are now preparing for life back in the Championship, having suffered relegation last year following their promotion the year before.

The next task for the former Accrington Stanley and Chesterfield manager will be to keep the Latics in the second tier.

Cook will now start preparing for life in the Championship and he added: “I sit here very proud of the success we have enjoyed this season but in equal measure aware of the challenges we face moving forwards into the Championship – an exciting challenge.”

The Verdict

Cook has had a phenomenal year, winning more away games than any other manager in Wigan's history.

A new long-term deal was always likely and it is what the fans want for their boss as a reward for a stunning season.

But the problem with a four-year deal is that this now makes it very hard for Wigan to sack Cook if, say, they have a repeat of the 2016/17 season where Gary Caldwell had to be dismissed with the club in the relegation zone.
