Wigan Athletic have announced on their official website that Noel Hunt has signed for the club.

After impressing on trial with Wigan Athletic, Noel Hunt has put pen to paper on a one year deal at The DW Stadium.

Noel Hunt was a free agent after spending one year with Portsmouth and helping them win promotion to League One as champions of the fourth tier.

Although he was largely used as a bit-part player, the thrice-capped former Republic of Ireland international featured 24 times for Pompey and scored once.

During his time at Fratton Park, Hunt was managed by Paul Cook.

Now that he is Wigan manager, Paul Cook has swooped to reunite with Noel Hunt after initially taking him on trial.

During his lengthy career, the 34-year-old has played over 350 games, including spells in Ireland, Scotland and England.

Noel Hunt, who is the brother of Stephen Hunt, has played for Shamrock Rovers, Waterford United, Dunfermline Athletic, Dundee United, Reading, Leeds United, Ipswich Town, Southend United and Portsmouth.

The 5ft 8in forward spent one season in the Premier League, scoring two goals in 36 games (of which 24 were starts).

Wigan Athletic have brought in the experienced forward with Paul Cook praising him as a "top pro".

The Verdict

Noel Hunt has never been prolific but Paul Cook is well aware of that and has not brought him in to score loads of goals.

The 34-year-old can add experience and nous and his character off the field will help in bringing through some younger strikers, such as Ivan Toney and Ryan Colclough.
