Chesterfield have snapped up Liam O’Neil from Premier League outfit West Bromwich Albion for an undisclosed fee, the Sky Bet League One side have officially announced.
O’Neil joined the Baggies at the age of 16 but only made five Premier League appearances. He hadn’t featured in any games this season, with his first-team chances always likely to be slim in a full squad.
The versatile midfielder will return to the League One after spending a loan spell with Scunthorpe last season, during which he impressed with two goals in 22 games before sustaining an injury that forced him to return to his parent club.
O’Neil’s ability to play in the defence and midfield will undoubtedly represent a bonus for Chesterfield as a new campaign gets under way, and his debut may well come in the League Cup at Port Vale on Tuesday.
“Liam is a young player who has played in West Brom’s first team. He’s exactly what we want – a midfield player who can also play at the back, if required’’, Saunders told chesterfield-fc.co.uk.
“He’s one for the future for us, having been tracked by the club for two-and-a-half years. We were going to loan him but we’ve managed to sign him permanently, which is great for the long-term future of the club”.
The 22-year-old for his part expressed his delight and said that he decided to make the move to gain more experience and play more regular footballer.
He said, ‘’I want to get some experience and develop as a player and I think I’ll be able to do that here. I’m looking forward to it and I’m excited.
‘’I want to be getting regular football and that’s key for me now. I’m 22 now and this is perfect timing’’.
Chesterfield currently sit in ninth position in Sky Bet League One, having won twice, drawn once and lost once.
