Championship club Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed the signing of Dutch defender Joost van Aken on their club’s official website.

The 23-year-old has been given the number four shirt following his arrival from Dutch first division side Heerenveen.

Van Aken made 26 league appearances for the Dutch outfit during the 2016/17 campaign as his former club finished ninth in the Eredivisie table.

The towering centre-back, who stands at 6’3” tall, becomes Wednesday’s fourth signing of what has been a quiet summer for Carlos Carvalhal’s side.

The Dutch U21 international’s fee is undisclosed in the report on the club’s website.

He will be eligible to make his debut for the Owls when Nottingham Forest travels to Hillsborough after the international break next month.

The Verdict

Adding competition to your squad’s ranks is always a good thing.

Carvalhal’s squad is filled to the brim with talented defenders and bringing in Van Aken will make them work harder for their spots, especially if the Dutchman impresses early on in Sheffield.

This is obvious given the player's height, but he is lethal in the air going forward and calm in the air at the back.

A classic centre-back and a young player who can develop into one of the club’s most important players if he reaches the potential that many believe he can.
