Championship side Sheffield United have completed a shock deadline day move for Birmingham City striker Clayton Donaldson, the club have confirmed.

The Blades have been looking for a new additions in the last few weeks of the transfer window in order to compete in the Championship this season, with a striker one of the priorities.

Donaldson signed on a one-year-deal at Bramall Lane and the club have an option to extend it by a further year and becomes the clubs second signing of the day.

Donaldson joins Motherwell centre back Ben Heneghan as a deadline day addition. He began his career at Hull City where he made two appearances, before spells at Crewe Alexandra and Brentford.

He scored 32 goals in over 100 appearances at Birmingham City after moving there from Griffin Park, but went down the pecking order under new manager Harry Redknapp, who brought in Sam Gallagher up front this summer.

The Verdict

Sheffield United have need to bring in a striker this summer and Donaldson certainly offers something different to Billy Sharp, who will be the number on option up front for the Blades this season.

Donaldson is an improved version of Leon Clarke, and is a good player this level. He's better than nothing, but to be picky, they really needed to add some pace up top this summer.

They were linked with Jerome Sinclair of Watford, who, though he lacks of experience, would have been a better option as he's quicker and offers more of what they need.

Despite this, Donaldson is a decent signing for United, and will certainly help them in their survival quest.
