Rotherham United have confirmed on the club's official website that Joe Newell has penned a new short team deal.

Midfielder Newell's contract was set to expire this summer but he has put pen to paper on a new one year deal, keeping him at the AESSEAL New York Stadium until the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

Newell has been a mainstay in Rotherham's midfield this season, featuring 40 times and scoring seven goals for Paul Warne's side.

He has a total of 110 games for the Millers since joining them in the summer of 2015 for an undisclosed fee from Peterborough United.

Predominantly a central midfielder, the 25-year-old is also comfortable playing on the wing and has even filled in at left back before.

Now that Newell has sorted his future at Rotherham, he will be focused on helping them fight for promotion.

Warne's team, with the help of Newell in midfield, have enjoyed quite a successful year and currently find themselves sitting in 4th position in the League One table.

The Millers have a nine point gap going into the last three games of the year, meaning that their place in the play-offs is all but cemented now.

The Verdict

This is a great piece of business by Newell. He has been an integral part of Rotherham's side for the entirety of his stay in Yorkshire, including when they were in the Championship. The versatile midfielder is a useful asset to have whether Rotherham are playing Championship or League One football next season and I am surprised he has not been offered more than just the one year extension.
