Sky Bet League One side Rochdale have completed the signing of Manchester United goalkeeper Joel Castro Pereira on a one-month loan deal, the club have confirmed on their official site.
The 19-year-old comes in as added competition for the number one jersey, with manager Keith Hill confirming that he will provide genuine competition to current goalkeepers Josh Lillis and Johny Diba.
Hill told the official site: ‘He’s an exciting goalkeeper. His distribution is flamboyant and his ability in goal is absolutely magnificent.
‘He comes in to push Josh [Lillis] and Johny [Diba], and one of the main reasons for bringing him in is that we feel Johny is missing out on essential game time.’
Despite being highly-rated at United, he has been unable to force his way into the first-team due to the embarrassment of riches in the goalkeeping department, with David De Gea, Sergio Romero and Sam Johnstone being the three goalkeepers manager Louis Van Gaal tends to choose from.
Pereira, a Portuguese Under-21 international, will be hoping to get some regular game time at Spotland as he looks to start fulfilling some of his obvious potential.
The 19-year-old was an unused substitute in Rochdale’s 0-0 at high-flying Bury this afternoon – a result which keeps Dale tenth in League One.
