Reading’s talented young defender Sean Long has joined League 2 outfit Cambridge United on a loan that will last 6 months, the League Two side have confirmed.
After recent loan spells with Luton Town and Braintree, Long has made the step up to League Two level, where he will expect to challenge for a starting berth in Shaun Derry’s side.
Jaap Stam has been assessing the young players at his disposal throughout pre-season and has fielded youthful lineups in all 3 of his friendlies.
However, it is clear that Long isn’t high up the pecking order, with the Dutchman preferring youngsters Rob Dickie, who impressed out on loan last season at Cheltenham, and the inexperienced Zak Jules to Long.
With his Reading career at stake, the Irishman will be eager to impress at new side Cambridge United, where his versatility could provide him with an opportunity to show his worth as both a centre back and a full-back.
